The purpose of ASBE is to provide an active vehicle for strengthening the small business sector of the free enterprise system through increasing the effectiveness and impact of small business teaching and consultation in colleges and universities, particularly relating to the operation of the Small Business Institute program.

ASBE also strives:

To provide a means for the exchange of information and guidance concerning teaching, research, extension, and other activities designed to aid small business.
To enhance the relationship and cooperation between faculty with Small Business Institutes and other organizations that are a part of the small business community.
To promote an interdisciplinary approach to solving small business problems.
To develop methods for enhancing levels of recognition of participating faculty and staff of Small Business Institutes and others involved in small business education.
To stimulate effective involvement and continuing interest of students in small business.
  

  

ASBE Timeline

1974 The idea is born -- some truly dedicated to the advancement of small business had a vision
1975 SSBIA is formed -- it started small, but the idea would soon catch on
1978 SSBIA's Constitution is adopted -- we now had framework
1987 SSBIA's membership exceeds 100 -- we now had a presence
1989 1st issue of the Journal of Business & Entrepreneurship is published at Northwestern State University in Louisiana -- we now had an avenue to support our research scholars
1991 Journal of Business & Entrepreneurship moves to California State University
1992 The "Fellows" program is initiated -- we now have a way to recognize some very hard work by some very deserving individuals
1994 Journal of Business & Entrepreneurship moves to its current home of New Mexico State University -- our credibility increases
1996 The Small Business Administration dissolves its support of the Small Business Institute Program -- a hurdle that had to be overcome
1997 SSIBA changes its name to ASBE -- it was time to become a national and international organization
2001 503 (C) status is applied for -- we will have a way for others to show their support for small business
2003 We went out on our own, withdrew from the Federation of Business Disciplines (FBD), and launched our own conference
